Piston Rings
Piston rings include oil rings, gas rings, and twisted rings
The three gaps and functions of piston rings:
Opening (annular) clearance, axial clearance (side clearance), radial clearance (back clearance).
1. The opening gap is the necessary opening when installing the piston ring;
2. The side gap is the gap between the upper and lower sides of the piston ring arranged in the ring groove. This gap prevents the ring from getting stuck in the ring groove;
3. Back clearance means that when the piston ring is working, the high-pressure gas during combustion enters the back clearance and exerts pressure on the piston ring to strengthen the sealing effect between the piston ring and the cylinder working surface.

(1) After the twisted ring is installed into the cylinder along with the piston, there is a moment arm between the resultant force of the tensile stress on the outside of the piston ring and the resultant force of the compressive stress on the inside, so a twisting moment is generated, causing the ring to twist. (2) Advantages: Eliminate or reduce harmful pump oil effects; when the ring is twisted, the edge of the ring contacts the upper and lower end surfaces of the ring groove, which increases the surface contact stress and prevents the piston ring from moving up and down in the ring groove. It has the function of pumping oil and increases the sealing performance; the twisted ring is also easy to run in and has the function of scraping oil downward. (3) When installing, attention must be paid to the shape and direction of the end face of the ring. The inner circular groove should be upward and the outer circular groove should be downward. It cannot be installed upside down.
