There are two types of piston rings: air ring and oil ring:
Gas rings are divided into rectangular rings, conical rings, positive twisted inscribed rings, negative twisted conical rings, trapezoidal rings, barrel face rings, etc. according to the cross-sectional shape. The most commonly used is the rectangular ring, which has good manufacturability and thermal conductivity. However, this ring will continuously send the oil on the cylinder wall into the cylinder. This phenomenon is called "oil pumping effect". In order to reduce and eliminate this effect, twisted rings are widely used to achieve this purpose.
Oil rings are divided into two categories: ordinary oil rings (integral oil rings) and combined oil rings (split oil rings).
Ordinary oil rings can be divided into different-to-outward chamfer rings, same-toward chamfer rings, same-to-inward chamfer rings, nose-type oil rings, and double-nose oil rings. The combined oil ring is composed of three oil scraping steel sheets and two elastic lining rings, and its advantages are as follows:
①The sheet ring is very thin, and the specific pressure on the cylinder wall is large, so the oil scraping effect is strong;
②The three oil scrapers are independent and have good adaptability to the cylinder;
③ light weight;
④The oil return passage is large. Therefore, combined oil rings are widely used in high-speed engines. The disadvantage is that the manufacturing cost is high (the outer surface of the ring must be chrome-plated, otherwise the sliding property is not good).
Piston ring assembly clearance includes end clearance, back clearance and side clearance. These three refer to:
①Measure the piston ring end gap: first place the piston ring flat in the cylinder, and use the piston head to push the piston ring to the unworn part of the cylinder or any part of the cylinder, and then measure the gap at the opening with a feeler gauge. If the end gap is too large, it cannot be used; if the gap is too small, take it out and use a fine file to file the end of the ring mouth until it meets the requirements;
②Backlash: refers to the gap formed between the back of the piston ring and the piston ring groove after the piston and piston ring are installed in the cylinder. For the convenience of measurement, usually only the difference between the groove depth and the ring width is measured for calculation. Generally, if the gas ring of gasoline engine is 00.35mm lower than the bank, it meets the backlash requirement. In order to prevent the ring from being stuck in the cylinder, if the backlash is too small, the piston ring groove can be properly machined.
③Side clearance: refers to the gap formed between the piston ring and the groove plane. If the side gap is too large, air leakage will affect the sealing effect; if it is too small, the piston ring will expand and get stuck in the groove or lose its elasticity. When measuring the side clearance, it is advisable to install the piston ring in the ring groove, and it is better not to be loose or stiff when rolling around the ring groove. Then use a feeler gauge to measure the gap between the ring and the groove. If the side clearance of the piston ring is too small, the piston ring can be ground flat to make it reach the specified side clearance.
