In December 2010, the demand for commercial vehicles in Europe continued to rise. The total number of EU commercial vehicles registered increased by 12.5%, which also increased the number of EU commercial vehicles registered by 8.0% throughout the year to 1772271. Among them, the commercial vehicle registrations of France, Germany and the United Kingdom rank among the top three in EU countries. The fastest growth in the EU in December 2010 was in the heavy truck sector. In terms of heavy trucks, the registration of heavy trucks in the EU increased by 70.2% in December 2010, and Germany (4496), France (2842) and the United Kingdom (2220) became the three largest heavy truck markets in the EU. In 2010, the EU registered 179185 heavy trucks, an increase of 8.4% over the same period of 2009 (165269). See Table 1 for the registration of commercial vehicles in EU countries in December and the whole year. Except for the decline in the number of commercial vehicle registrations in a few countries in Eastern Europe and Southern Europe, the number of commercial vehicle registrations in most other EU countries has a relatively obvious upward trend. Germany and Nordic countries showed the most obvious upward trend. In terms of vehicle types, the growth rate of European long-distance transport vehicles is much faster than that of engineering vehicles.
The registered number of heavy trucks in North America market in 2010 was 142096, an increase of 20% compared with 117983 in the same period of 2009. Because many transport fleets have the problem that old vehicles need to be updated, the main force of truck market growth in North America in 2010 came from the field of road transport. The performance of engineering vehicles in North America in 2010 was not very optimistic, but it has great potential.
Due to the continued boom in the Brazilian market, South America still maintained a good upward trend. In 2010, the sales volume of heavy trucks in Brazil reached 109760, up 64% over the same period of 2009 (66950).
In Asia, India's heavy truck market reached 211543 vehicles in 2010, an increase of 69% over 125173 vehicles in the same period of 2009. The sales volume of heavy trucks in Japan reached 24453 in 2010, an increase of 29% over 18889 in the same period of 2009.
